We would like to thank you for interest in the Historical Society. In 1998 the Durkeeville Historical Society was started with concerned individuals in the community, they wanted to make a difference. DHS opened its doors to the community. Via the permission of the Jacksonville Housing Authority (JHA), it was located in the Oaks housing complex that replaced the Durkeeville Housing Project that was built in 1937. The Historical Center was in one of the two renovated units of the original structure. The Oaks Day Care Center occupied the other historic unit. In June of 2005 the decision was made to close the Historical Center to allow the day care center to expand.
Because of its importance to the community, The Jacksonville Housing Authority constructed a new facility for the DHS at the corner of Myrtle Avenue and Martin Luther King, Jr., Parkway at 1293 W. 19th Street, its current location. In 2000 the Durkeeville Historical Center opened new doors to the community.
In 2011 and beyond, the Durkeeville Historical Society is an organization that will make a difference in Jacksonville! We are committed to not only preserving the past, but also helping to revitalize one of the most historic neighborhoods in the city for future generations.
In our new location we have expanded our goal and have enhanced the original mission of collecting and promoting the history of Durkeeville by showcasing the African American History of Jacksonville and serving as a cultural literacy and resource center for all members of the community from young people to seniors, by pictures, displays, videos and artifacts collected from our many contributors.
We are asking that you help us fulfill our mission by making additional contributions in the name of your organization or business, volunteering your time with our fundraising events, and attending our monthly meetings. We are currently in need of those who would like to give some of their time acting as a boardmember, member or volunteer.
